Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
In the years before I moved out of Tucson, I was making a concerted effort to pare down my possessions to something manageable - I'd been a collector and a pack rat, and was neck-deep in useless geegaws. In the last month before I moved, I got everything I owned down to the point where I could have conceivably packed everything (outside of furniture) into my car.

Imagine my surprise when - after two months of living up here without ninety percent of my stuff - I'd ultimately coming to realize that I didn't actually need nor want a lot of the possessions I'd packed and brought with me after all. Yup, it's time for me to GET RID OF MORE COMIC BOOKS.

The usual deal goes like this: Comment here or drop me a line if you'd like to reserve any of these books. I'm selling each of them for $5, except From Hell which is ENORMOUS and I'm selling for $15 and V For Vendetta and Watchmen which are also quite big and I'm selling for $10. When you total up your books, add $2 shipping for the first $5 worth of books, and $1 shipping for every $5 above that.

Also, two things: Give me a little time to mail these out, the post office here is a fucking nightmare. I may even drive into Seattle proper to ship this stuff (or at least do so when I'm in the city for whatever reason), it's worth the trip. Secondly, if you're moving in the next couple of weeks, don't be all giving me the address you're moving from. Give me the one you're moving to, I'll wait a little while and ship 'em there. Folks all doing that to me the last couple times I'm getting rid of books. Feh.

So, here they are - excepting Street Angel and Bojeffries, these're all in top notch shape:

The Bojeffries Saga
Doing the Islands with Bacchus
From Hell (Remember, this'un is $15. It is big)
Hellboy: The Conqueror Worm
Hellboy: The Chained Coffin and Others
Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
Hellboy: Strange Places
Hellboy: Right Hand of Doom

Pogo Book 8
Pogo Book 9
Pogo Book 11
Promethea Book 1
Promethea Book 2
Promethea Book 3
Promethea Book 4
Promethea Book 5
Sam And Max: Surfing the Highway

Street Angel (Some of the pages at the end are loose)
V For Vendetta ($10)
Watchmen ($10)
Will Elder: Chicken Fat

Also, this set of comics for$3:
The Spectre (Azzarello/Chiang) #1-3

There you go, folks, holler if there's something you like (and my paypal address is jon@ape-law.com, fyi). Thanks!

I know you know I'm a fan of getting rid of stuff and not having stuff, and I've been meaning to ask you for ages now, have you been enjoying the process? Does it feel liberating? Or has it been tough to part with some junk? Or both? I reckon it's good for folks regardless of how they feel about it during the getting rid of, but I hope you're digging it.

I've actually been wanting to write about it on and off during the process, but it's hard to sort of put a finger on any point where it's like "Now I am done" or "I'm entering the next phase," so I never know where to start.

It's unbelievably liberating for the most part - I had been at a point where I was all but drowning in possessions which had given me a day or so of enjoyment before they sank into an indecipherable mass of other possessions.

The nice thing is that the further I whittle down my belongings, the more I appreciate the things I'm keeping; I actually have the time to sit and get a good gander at the pictures I've kept, enjoy the design or the memories of the collectibles, AND there's few enough things now that my studio - where just about everything I own is kept - comprises a sort of unified environment which is soothing and recharges me (as opposed to what it was like when the shelves were overflowing with tchotchkes, and I felt constantly overwhelmed by the mess).

There's been a few things with which I've had difficulty parting, but I can only think of one thing with which I've regretted parting, which is a pretty good run.

Probably the only downside to all of this is that I'm almost developing a pathological aversion to possessions, and I often have to check myself before selling something or giving or throwing something away. Like, there's two stacks of books in the studio right now that are in the "consider and/or read once more" pile, and four boxes in the closet full of things currently facing the chopping block. The last thing I want to do is divest myself of something meaningful, functional or pleasing, but I certainly don't want to be holding on to anything for the sake of holding on to it ...

I envy you both the ability to make this change. Somewhat. I have all these books see. And I love them, and I keep buying more. I just can't manage to let myself get rid of any of them.

Also, a bunch of other crap, like Star Wars toys that never leave the garage, and tools, and old electronics. Mostly the books though. 31+ bankers boxes when we moved 2 years ago, and I'm sure there's plenty more since then.

The first time you make beaucoup bucks selling something on eBay, it will become easier.

I've actually been giving some thought to that. I've got a garage full of old Star Wars shit, and I still have two long boxes of comics that I never look at. From your other posts though, I gathered that the process of selling on eBay was kind of like a grinding jungle death march.

OH AND ANOTHER THING! One of the other nice side effects of this is that I'm able to appreciate possessable things without having to possess them; I see some toy or print which I find to be neat, I don't HAVE to own it. I can just appreciate it for the qualities which draw me to it, kind of drink in its relative awesomeness, and then move on with my life without adding to the burden of possessions.

Holy crap, both of these comments contain many beautiful and wise sentiments. I realize you may have just spilled all youur guts on the topic, but I do think it'd be worth writing up a big entry about if you have more junk to say about it. I feel like just in reading these two comments I learned a little bit more about my own desire to not own stuff. Man.

I might just, and hey, I ought to say thanks to you on account of you and your pre-Parisian efforts to get down to the essentials were instrumental in encouraging me to give it a shot.

Hey, and I'll add something to the sentiment above (in the interest of being more beautiful and wise than EVER!): I can't ever front that I don't have the instinctive desire to possess stupid objects - dumb toys, action figures, I had something of an internal struggle about this Vinyl Hellboy toy at Stumptown - so when I'm reflecting on these things which catch my eye, I have this added bittersweet dimension to my appreciation for it. I'm not only considering what about the thing I like, I'm reflecting on the days when I used to own such things, the feeling of ownership, and the deliberate missed opportunity of ownership, how this could have been part of my life and environment moving forward, etc.

If I'm honest, it resembles nothing so much as that sad and noble sensation of unrequited love. (Which is, as you know, one of the top fifteen kinds of love)

Man, you got a real pack of quality art heading your way. I don't need to say anything about Watchmen, but I'd add that those Hellboy books (well, not THOSE precisely, but the copies I own) have provided me with endless hours of enjoyment. Every time I flip though one, I am more more in awe of Mignola's luffly art and spare writing. Lucky man!

I got rid of a buncha books and took it in to this bookstore in Ballard for a little over $100 in credit. I am in process of clearing out some of my possessions too. It does feel liberating, but I still keep buying books.

I might have a garage sale via LJ sometime this summer.

Jon, you're very lucky to be *able* to get rid of stuff. Me, I been trying to sell off various things for months now, and can't get 'em out of the house! And somehow, I feel like a sucker if I just put 'em out on the curb for the urban denizens to take.
