So, this has been driving me nertz lately; at the office, we have a stash of Cup Noodle handy for those of us (hands!) who forget to bring lunch or can't get out of the office, whatever. It's our stash of Cup Noodle. The thing is, I could SWEAR that when I was a kid, "Cup Noodle" was called "Cup O' Noodles." Am I totally messed up here?

I've been thinking about it so much lately not just because we have that stash, but also because of all the British TV I've been watching, where it's apparently called "Pot Noodle" (as in the below 1992 advert featuring Phil Hartman, enjoy that [info]rjwhite) and, oddly, gets mentioned all the time. It is definitely these days called "Cup Noodle" in the US, and I can't find any reference to it ever being "Cup O' Noodles," although I even vaguely remember some commercials where they called it that. Anyone? Anyone help me out here?

I remember it being called Cup O' Noodles but I have no proof. My brain is its own Cup O' Noodles, so take that with as much sodium and MSG as you want.

I remember it as either a Campbell's or Lipton cup o'noodle soup. It came in a foil envelope that you were to dump in a cup and add hot water.

Yeah, maybe that's it. Maybe the Cup Noodle was always Cup Noodle, but the existence of Lipton Cup O'Noodles is coloring our memories. I was a Giggle Noodle girl myself.

Giggle noodle! One of those soup packets with dry noodles in the shape of moons, stars, and hearts, and a big chunk of salty yellow stuff. Giggle noodle!

Oddly, because of that difficulty in the Japanese language with pronouncing two hard consonants back to back, they appear to pronounce it "Cup-o-Noodles", or so YouTube and its collection of Japanese ads would have me believe.

You are correct. I remember eating cup o' noodles when I was just a litle boy. I didn't like it though, because it had peas in it.

As a child, I found pea-ness to be gross. But now that I'm a man, I love pea-ness.

It proves I'm good at taking a quick look at something out of context and interpreting it as gospel. So there!

But yeah... I remember calling it Cup O' Noodles, too.

Do we? I thought we only had Pot Noodle, but then again it's not the sort of thing I usually get. We do have Cup O' Soup, though - could that be what you're thinking about, Jon?

And is it just me, or is it incredibly fey to say o' when you mean "of"? It's even worse when people come up with cartoon characters with fake Irish names like Nick O'Time or Time O'Day or Day O'Mourning or whatever.

We do. I used to get them in Quality Save Home & Bargain shops.
I can't stomach Pot Noodles as they taste of rubber. But Cup Noodles are quite nice. 10 years aback they used to have chunks or real chicken in it! Yum!

I had no idea it was called "Cup Noodle" officially. I always thought it was Cup O'Noodle. Am I crazy, or didn't Times Square have a big giant Cup O'Noodles ad in the middle of it for a long time?

I thought you had suffered a traumatic head injury, calling them 'Cup Noodles' like they weren't originally Irish! The O'Noodle clan has a long and proud tradition! I don't care what some fly-by-night Internet tells me, my brain knows the things that are true. Cup O' Noodles! Not hearing otherwise.

I distinctly remember Cup O' Noodles. However, typing "Cup O' Noodles" into Wikipedia search reveals this page. Since most of the rest of your Friends List seems to have this same delusion, clearly some kind of chem-trail mass hypnotism thinger is going on.

And as any fan of The Young Ones will tell you, across the pond this dish is called 'Pot Noodle.'

I laughed out loud - I'm actually still laughing - to the wonderfully po-faced caption to the trio of pictures depicting a container in its box, the container outside the box, and the container filled with hot water: "Preparation of cup noodles"

It doesn't even need punctuation.
