Thrift Store Find: Wood Burning Kit
At the same thrift shop where I found the old-school comics rack spinner, I found this wood-burning kit.

It's really in excellent shape considering its age - actually, even not considering its age, merely the fact that it survived sitting on a shelf crammed with Atari 2600 controllers and broken fans speaks a lot to its condition.

I've kind of always wanted a wood-burning kit; we had my brother's old one lying around the garage for ever and a day, but my mother was too nervous to let me ever play with it, and it went the way of flared trousers during a garage sale one day in the Eighties.

I'm not sure if this one still works, but it was worth a couple of bucks to find out. Maybe I'll graduate from woodburning to ritual scarification. It IS the 21st century, after all...

I totally had one of those...and my 1970's mom was way less concerned about safety. They are almost indestructible (I tried) mine was also a leather burning kit. I have to say no amazing crafts were created, but try it on toilet paper such fun!

It seems to me, that the thrift stores in the Seattle area are some sort of magical time machines.

When I was a kid we had matches and we were DAMN HAPPY WE DID!

For real, though, I bet drawing with that thing (if it works) could be a conflagration of fun.

Damn, dude. Quit rummaging around in my childhood. Srsly.

I had this kit, and a half dozen or so wood blocks like the ones you photo'd, including Mr Indian Chief, specifically.
I remembe the instructions you shot, and the cork around the burner (which came with points for different calligraphy styles or special lines)
As noted above, they're virtually indestrucible if the cord is ok. And a load of fun to play with.

Rock on with your bad self. :)

I had one of those as a kid! It sure was a lot easier to draw straight lines than circles.

we had a flood in our basement, and we found an old drawing kit my dad had, and some other awesome old stuff, too. i even found an old working brownie camera, with unused flashbulbs! i have to figure out what i want to use that for.

ps - i don't know if you've seen, but dc jacked your lil' characters! in superman/batman #51, there's not only a whole lil' justice league, but also, on the last page, a bunch of lil' batman and superman villains.

Batman, little or otherwise, is not my character. I jacked their character, they're totally in the right to jack it back ...

true... i was more remarking that quite a few of those lil' villains were very similar to your interpretations. i was just bringing it to your attention, because i thought it might interest you if you hadn't seen it already. it's truly interesting to me that two different artists could arrive at such similarly unique interpretations independently.

I don't see any similarity in the interpretations.
