I hate to say that I'm not going to get around to recoloring this. dansfr2Dan Christensen and I have restarted the JSA Shootout, with his challenge being to redraw a panel from a Golden Age comic. Dan's was a splash panel from All-Star Comics #8, and just looks amazing. Mine was a page from an early Whiz Comics, featuring Captain Marvel waling the fuck outta some poor dolt.

The original:

I replaced the generic hood with Sivana, because Sivana is cool. Also, I should color it ...

Very nice. The ole-time radio components are choice, and I could look at your Sivana drawings all day.

Nice! I like how Cap crashes the dialog box and the fact Sivana isn't wearing socks cracks me up (at least is looks like he's sans-sock.)

Did you draw Sivana upside down or did you rotate the paper?

Huh, I don't know if i know how to answer this question. I see what you mean, but I don't think any cartoonist draws exclusively right-side up, you know? I'm always rotating the paper, even if the character is upright, just to get the proper curves and angles.

But yeah, I basically drew him from the same vantage as I drew Cap.

I think you got what I meant.

I mostly draw figures from the "front" as the reader would see it but I don't actually rotate the paper until I'm working on backgrounds.

Dude, I totally have an idea for a Captain Marvel limited series upon seeing this panel.

Does it involve copious Sivana-slapping?

Sorta. Remember how Sivana was this big philanthropist who got pissed off because no one would listen to his plans to save the world? Well, how about this: Sivana manages to get himself appointed to some high position in the US goverment and starts implementing all these plans that improve the economy, fix everyone's quality of life, help the environment, etc etc... and the secret is, he's doing it all just to prove all of his plans in the past could have worked and he secretly plans to destroy it all just to spite people for having doubted him. Cap has to, in effect, foil Sivana from foiling himself.

Actually, that's awesome. I would read that.

I dig it but I have a qualm with Sivana's arms - they're sort of locked in the same position, like he's typing a post in his Livejournal or something.

You're definitely right. I have to admit, I am not at all happy with Sivana's pose, he's far more stiff than Captain Marvel.

That's the Speed of Mercury at work! One instant, you're blogging about the new (evil) hair creme you found--then you're suddenly flying through the air so fast that your body doesn't even have time to adjust. The thing is, while he's flying through the air he is still typing. Even his evil mind has not yet had time to process his dire situation.

At least your Captain America looks way less like he's on his way to the pride parade.

This is awesome. I, too, like the way that the Dialog Box is in the background.

This is a good source of--well, really little panels, a few of which are Golden Age:

Guess where they're from!
